Latest News!

The latest news from the universe of Doctor Who:

New The Waters of Mars Trailer!
A new trailer for Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars was shown at San Diego Comic Con yesterday, you can watch it above. Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars will broadcast later this year on BBC One and BBC HD.

The Master to Return!
The BBC have confirmed that John Simm will return as the Master in the last two 2009 Doctor Who specials, the title of one of which has been revealed as The End of Time, read on for further details:

John Simm will return as the Master in the two special episodes which bring David Tennant's era as the Doctor to a stunning conclusion. There's been speculation about Simm's involvement with the show but we can confirm he'll be back later this year, once again playing the Doctor's deadly nemesis.

Simm first appeared as the Master in Utopia, The Sound of Drums and Last of the Time Lords. All three episodes were written by executive producer and head writer Russell T Davies who also wrote his upcoming adventure.

The character debuted in 1971 and on-screen has faced all but the Second and Ninth Doctors. Davies' version of the Master saw him retain his wit and cunning but since Utopia he's been callous and charismatic, sick, psychotic and enormously likeable. In short, everyone's favourite megalomaniac.

At the close of Series Three we saw the Master gunned down by his wife and whilst lying in his enemy's arms, he refused to regenerate. The world believed he had died and the Doctor accepted he was the last of the Time Lords. But this is Doctor Who and you can't keep a good bad guy down!

If anyone wants to remain in the dark about the two specials which form the Tenth Doctor's finale, please look away now! Footage from the first of these episodes was screened during the Doctor Who panel at Comic-Con International 2009, meaning details about the adventure are officially out there!

As we revealed earlier today, the episodes feature the return of John Simm as the Master. The Doctor's fellow Time Lord is sporting a different hair colour in the finale, working a striking, lighter look.

And the Master isn't the only familiar figure returning from Doctor Who's recent past. executive producer Russell T Davies, who wrote David Tennant's final episodes, confirmed that Alexandra Moen is back as Lucy Saxon, the character we previously saw in The Sound of Drums and Last of the Time Lords. Although married to the Master she put a serious dent in their relationship by shooting him but what happened to her after the events of Series Three has remained a mystery, so far...

Russell further explained that footage from the finale screened at Comic-Con included the voice of Timothy Dalton as the Narrator. His exact role in the specials is currently undisclosed but Dalton is, of course, best known for portraying James Bond in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill.

One of the biggest cheers of the Doctor Who panel occurred when the trailer showed the face of Catherine Tate, last seen playing Donna Noble in Journey's End. Bernard Cribbins, who played her grandfather, Wilf, also features in the trailer which depicts a grim-faced Doctor walking purposefully away from a wall of leaping flames... but towards what, or whom..?

The specials are to air later this year around the Christmas period on BBC One and BBC HD.

First Trailer for 3rd & 4th 2009 Specials!
Apart from a trailer for The Waters of Mars, a trailer for the last two 2009 Doctor Who specials was shown at San Diego Comic Con yesterday, but was not made available to watch online. However, you can watch a camera-recorded version from Comic-Con above.

Torchwood: Series 4 Confirmed!
Russell T Davies confirmed at a Q&A meeting at the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday that Torchwood will return for a fourth series, more details are yet to be announced.

The Sarah Jane Adventures: Old Enemies to Return
It's been confirmed that the Judoon will appear in the first story from the next series of The Sarah Jane Adventures alongside a new alien called Androvax. The Trickster is also set to return as well as the Slitheen in the final story, alongside their cousions the Blathereen.

John Lesson to Voice K.9 in New Doctor Who Spin-Off
John Lesson, best known for voicing K.9 in Doctor Who, is to voice the character in his new Doctor Who spin-off show, also called K.9. More details on the show coming soon.

Sarah meanwhile discovers a magnificent white edifice with a flashing beacon on top, but is captured by a group of savage Exxilons to be sacrificed for defiling their city. The Doctor and the humans enter into an uneasy alliance with a group of Daleks who also land on the planet and whose weapons are also drained of energy. Investigating, the Doctor learns from the Naval base commander that the sinkings are centred around an abandoned sea fort. Visiting the fort, the Doctor and Jo are attacked by a 'Sea Devil' - an amphibious breed of the prehistoric creatures or “Silurians” encountered by the Doctor not long before. The Master is secretly building a machine to wake the Sea Devils from their hibernation, so that they can reclaim Earth from the human population. The Doctor tries to broker peace between them and humankind, but is captured by the Master. As the time approaches, the Doctor’s only hope to save the human race lies in sabotaging the device and entombing the Sea Devils.

Both sets are on sale exclusively at Forbidden Planet stores from late October priced £24.99 each.

Doctor Who Magazine - Issue 411

The cover and info on this month's edition of Doctor Who magazine:

TOM BAKER TALKS EXCLUSIVELY ABOUT PLAYING THE FOURTH DOCTOR AGAIN - IN DWM ISSUE 411!
He’s back! The jelly-baby munching, boggle-eyed bohemian puts on his long scarf and floppy hat once more, as the legendary Tom Baker returns to the role of the Fourth Doctor for the first time in over fifteen years! DWM talks exclusively and in depth to Tom about what made him come back to the role that made him famous, what he thinks of Doctor Who today and whether a meeting with the current Doctor could be on the cards. Tom also tells us what he thinks about these modern Doctors kissing their companions...

“Well, I don’t know how I would’ve done it,” Tom considers. “I suppose I would have made it extremely funny. Especially if I’d rescued the girl, and she’d kissed me, I would’ve been able to be absolutely astounded that she was pressing her lips on mine, thinking, ‘Oh, that was rather nice’ and then saying, ‘Would you like to do that again?’” He laughs. “But I don’t know. It was inconceivable during our time. We didn’t think like that. I played him entirely… I never did handle the girls. Or if I did handle the girls, I always did it clumsily, because I reasoned that the Doctor wouldn’t know about that.”

Series 5 Press Pack

Filming for series five of Doctor Who commenced today and the BBC have released a press pack explaining what viewers can expect from the show in 2010, which will starr new Doctor Matt Smith and Karen Gillan and new companion Amy Pond, read on for further details:

Filming starts on new series of Doctor Who!
Filming has at last started on the next series of Doctor Who! New showrunner and long-running Doctor Who fan Steven Moffat has developed this series and, as lead writer and executive producer, will be responsible for the overall creative direction of the show, as well as plot and character arcs. His previous episodes of Doctor Who, including the Bafta-winning episode Blink, have garnered widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike.

Discussing the series, Moffat commented, "And here it is, the big moment - the new Doctor, and his new best friend. And here's me, with the job I wanted since I was seven. 40 years to here! If I could go back in time and tell that little boy that one day all this would happen, he'd scream, call for his Mum and I'd be talking to you now from a prison cell in 1969. So probably best not then. Matt and Karen are going to be incredible, and Doctor Who is going to come alive on Saturday nights in a whole new way - and best of all, somewhere out there, a seven-year-old is going to see them, fall in love, and start making a forty year plan..."

Piers Wenger, executive producer and head of drama, BBC Wales added, "The scripts for the new series are every bit as funny, thrilling, scary and imaginative as you'd expect from the man who brought us The Empty Child and Blink. There's a strange and perfect alchemy between Steven and Matt Smith and the next few months are going to be riveting as that relationship starts to emerge on screen. Steven always says he's been waiting to do this job since he was seven. But it's actually the Doctor Who has been waiting for him."

The new series follows on from three Doctor Who specials starring David Tennant which will transmit later this year.

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning says, "I am thrilled that a whole new generation of children will forever say that their Doctor was the wonderful Matt Smith."

The series was co-commissioned by Ben Stephenson, controller, BBC Drama Commissioning for BBC One and Jay Hunt, controller of BBC One and will be produced by Tracie Simpson (Doctor Who) and Peter Bennett (Torchwood). Steven Moffat is Lead Writer and Executive Producer (Jekyll) with Piers Wenger, head of drama, BBC Wales and Beth Willis (Ashes to Ashes), also executive producing.

Filming is taking place in Cardiff right through to March 2010 and we'll be here to bring you the production news as it happens. So stay tuned. The journey starts right here!

The Name's Pond. Amy Pond
Details are beginning to emerge about the next Doctor's companion, and the big news is she'll be called Amy Pond.

Back in May we revealed that the new companion will be played by 21 year old Karen Gillan, but until now her character's full name has been more carefully guarded than the Doctor's 'real' name! Amy will travel in the Tardis alongside the new Doctor, played by Matt Smith, when the next series of Doctor Who begins in 2010.

Amy Pond is another memorable moniker from the new series head writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, whose previous creations include Sally Sparrow and River Song. The latest photo which we revealed earlier today indicates Amy will have a laid back, contemporary look. So far we've had no suggestion as to whether we'll meet the new companion's family, or even if she has a family. But time will tell, and we'll be here to bring you Amy's story as it unfolds!

First Photo of Next Doctor's Costume
Filming has begun on the new series of Doctor Who and the first sneak peek of the next Doctor's costume is revealed today so we can now confirm - he's looking good! Matt Smith will play the Eleventh Doctor when the new series starts in 2010 and as shooting began he commented, "I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show. The scripts are brilliant and working alongside Karen Gillan, Steven Moffat and the rest of the crew is an inspiration because their work ethic and passion for the show is so admirable. I'm excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor."

When the Doctor returns in 2010 he'll be dashing across the universe with Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan. His new costume comprises black boots, dark trousers, a smart shirt and bow tie with a light brown jacket completing the ensemble. It says adventure. It says laid back cool. It says Time Lord chic and we're loving it!

The choice of clothing for the Doctor is both crucial and high profile. From Tom Baker's iconic multicoloured scarf to the effortlessly stylish look favoured by David Tennant in his brown suit and flowing coat, the Time Lord's attire becomes a cultural reference point, as linked to the character as James Bond's dinner suit or Sherlock Holmes' deerstalker.

The new series of Doctor Who has begun filming and we'll be bringing you all the production news as it happens. It promises to be quite a ride!

Doctor Who returns later this year in The Waters of Mars, with two more specials to follow, before series five broadcasts in Spring 2010 on BBC One and BBC HD.

Torchwood: October 2009 Novels - Covers & Info

BBC Books have released the covers and synopsis for three new Torchwood novels:

THE UNDERTAKER'S GIFT - by Trevor Baxendale
The Hokrala Corp lawyers are back. They’re suing planet Earth for mishandling the twenty-first century, and they won’t tolerate any efforts to repel them. An assassin has been sent to remove Captain Jack Harkness. It’s been a busy week in Cardiff. The Hub’s latest guest is a translucent, amber jelly carrying a lethal electrical charge. Record numbers of aliens have been coming through the Rift, and Torchwood could do without any more problems. But there are reports of an extraordinary funeral cortege in the night-time city, with mysterious pallbearers guarding a rotting cadaver that simply doesn’t want to be buried. Torchwood should be ready for anything - but with Jack the target of an invisible killer, Gwen trapped in a forgotten crypt and Ianto Jones falling desperately ill, could a world of suffering be the Undertaker’s gift to planet Earth?

RISK ASSESSMENT - by James Goss
"Are you trying to tell me, Captain Harkness, that the entire staff of Torchwood Cardiff now consists of yourself, a woman in trousers and a tea boy?" Agnes Havisham is awake, and Jack is worried (and not a little afraid). The Torchwood Assessor is roused from her deep sleep in only the worst of times - it’s happened just four times in the last 100 years. Can the situation really be so bad? Someone, somewhere, is fighting a war, and they're losing badly. The coffins of the dead are coming through the Rift. With thousands of alien bodies floating in the Bristol Channel, it's down to Torchwood to round them all up before a lethal plague breaks out. And now they'll have to do it by the book. The 1901 edition.

CONSEQUENCES - by James Moran, Joseph Lidster, Andrew Cartmel, Sarah Pinborough & David Llewellyn
Saving the planet, watching over the Rift, preparing the Human race for the twenty-first century… Torchwood has been keeping Cardiff safe since the late 1800s. Small teams of heroes, working 24/7, encountering and containing the alien, the bizarre and the inexplicable. But Torchwood do not always see the effects of their actions. What links the Rules and Regulations for replacing a Torchwood leader to the destruction of a supermarket? How does a witness to an alien’s reprisals against Torchwood become caught up in a night of terror in a university library? And why should Gwen and Ianto’s actions at a local publisher’s affect Torchwood more than a century earlier? For Torchwood, the past will always catch up with them. And sometimes the future will catch up with the past...

The novels are on sale from 1st October at all good bookstores priced £7.99 each.
