Series 8 - Further Details

Doctor Who has made the front cover of many sci-fi related magazines recently, as new Doctor Peter Capaldi and current companion Jenna Coleman explains what to expect in the new series:

Sci-Fi Now
"The constituency of the audience needs to be reassured that it’s fine. Whether it’s fine or not, I’m not sure. The Doctor is as he has always been, and he is also totally different. That’s the great thing about Doctor Who; it carries its past with it all the time, so he brings the past with him, even if he’s different."

"I think if people think he’s different, they’re really meaning in contrast to Matt and David, who were both very amiable. He’s probably not as user friendly as they are. But he’s still unmistakably Doctor Who."

He adds: "I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for every single Doctor that there’s been, so I just sort of stand on their shoulders. It’s due to each and every one of their individual talent and charisma and gifts that the show’s still here. So I don’t have a specific Doctor that I look to, but I look to them all, and I do look to them all."

On Clara and the Doctor’s relationship Capaldi says: "It’s not romantic, but it’s not without love."

Coleman adds: "The new Doctor is unapologetic and a lot less patient. He’ll get the same job done, but he won’t beat around the bush at all; he’s straight to the point, he’s direct, he hasn’t got the patience of a human. He’s a lot fiercer, bolder, darker, but he’s got this curiosity, this mad curiosity… He’ll keep pushing the line further and further into danger to try and satisfy his curiosity, to try and find things out."

On Clara’s day-to-day life Coleman says: "In the same way we had Victorian Clara leading a double life, this Clara has a life of home, school, her domestic life, her domestic bliss, her flat in Shoreditch, and then the Doctor will bring the Tardis and land in the bedroom or land in the stationary cupboard at school, and then she’ll go off on her adventures. But she’s very strict about him returning her at exactly the right time so she doesn’t miss anything on Earth. So in a way she is kind of having her cake and eating it, but what she really doesn’t want is the double life to collide in any way. It has to be completely separate, and that is the control freak Clara coming through."

Entertainment Weekly
Does this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly defy the laws of physics by being bigger on the inside than it would appear from looking at its exterior? Fans of the British science fiction show Doctor Who may well think so. For this week’s cover story, senior writer Clark Collis travels to the UK to meet with Peter Capaldi, the new star of the now 51-year-old time travel saga, and to find out what fans can expect from the forthcoming season of Doctor Who, which premieres on BBC America on August 23rd. "He’s more alien than we’ve seen him for a while," says the actor, speaking about his version of the eccentric Time Lord. "He is less patient with the foibles of human beings."

Thankfully, the whole Who team were patient with EW‘s probing about the new, hush-hush season. In addition to Capaldi, Collis also spoke with the actor’s costar Jenna Coleman and showrunner Steven Moffat who tackled such burning as questions as "Will Capaldi’s previous appearances in the Who universe be referenced this season?" and "What will happen in the two-part finale?" Collis even got to drive the Doctor’s bigger-on-the-inside time- and space-ship the Tardis and did so without busting anything which, according to production designer Michael Pickwoad, makes him a more careful temporal navigator than previous Who star Matt Smith ("He was very good at breaking things"). We also persuade Capaldi to talk about the old monsters he’d like his Doctor to face and offer a sartorial breakdown of the Time Lord’s many looks through the show’s half-century history. Never seen Doctor Who (and feel a bid daunted by that history)? Then feel free to peruse our guide to how you can get into Who.

Doctor Who will return on Saturday 23rd August to BBC One and BBC One HD, a time is to be confirmed.

Series 8 - SFX Magazine Reveal New Details

The latest edition of SFX magazine features five collectible Doctor Who-themed covers. Included inside is an interview with executive producer Steven Moffat on the new series as well as details to all twelve episodes, read on for further details:

Dave Bradley, editor-in-chief of SFX, says "We’re thrilled to have this first cover with Peter Capaldi - and bonus covers with all his gang! Doctor Who remains a favourite with all our readers. A month ahead of the show's return to our screens, this is a great chance to chat with the head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat about what's in store for the new Doctor."

EPISODE DETAILS
  • 8.01: Clara trying to cope with her best friend being someone else. A terrifying monster.
  • 8.02: Gritty Dalek ep that goes into the last place in the universe the Doctor should be.
  • 8.03: Very funny Robin Hood story all about being a hero and whether the Doctor is a good man.
  • 8.04: The story of a date and the Doctor having what appears to be a mild nervous breakdown. Tiny guest cast, no CGI. A bit of Coupling. Quite scary.
  • 8.05: A Doctor Who heist movie with a cracking monster, one of Neill Gorton’s best.
  • 8.06: What effect would slipping away with the Doctor have on your life? A hoot with some serious bits. Bit like The Lodger.
  • 8.07: Proper drama with monsters and all the Doctor Who stuff that you could want. Also features a callback to a past episode (sort of).
  • 8.08: Moffat playing the long game with a callback to something from Matt’s first series. A brilliant idea of a monster. Foxes singing.
  • 8.09: A horror story that starts off with a very cute idea and becomes really quite frightening by the end. One of the best ever sight gags in it.
  • 8.10: Boldly beautiful, lyrical and poetic. A fairytale, but not Moffat fairytale. Quite different with a clever main visual idea
  • 8.11/12: High octane action, with Cybermen and some proper UNIT stuff. Strong emotional story about Clara and the Doctor and the fact that the way they interact might not be healthy for everyone around them.

Moffat also reveals there will be a number of outfits throughout the course of the upcoming run: "I think there’s always something a little bit formal about the Doctor. Oddly enough in this series, for whatever reason, he seems to be wearing different outfits far more often than the Doctor normally does. He’s got his basic outfit but he’s in a spacesuit in one of them, and he’s a caretaker in another one and then he’s all dressed up in a later episode."

"He does vary it a bit. And he mixes up the basic costume, hugely. We’ve tended to see  the white shirt version in public but actually the one I like best is when he wears the jumper under his coat. I think he looks like a submarine commander, like an old sailor or something. It makes him all rugged and handsome!"

However, Moffat says the final costume did bring up its own concerns: "There was an issue simply because it’s quite dark as a costume and it’s a show that largely takes place in a tunnel. I kept saying ‘We are going to be able to see him, aren’t we?’ I suppose the red lining helps, when the flaps are open."

Issue 251 also goes behind the scenes on Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and analyses the future of superheroes on TV with a complete guide to the upcoming shows Gotham, Constantine, The Flash, Agent Carter and more. The issue also features interviews with geek icon Felicia Day, director Luc Besson, and top fantasy author Robin Hobb.

Issue 251 of SFX magazine is on sale from today at all good newsagents priced £4.99 per copy.

Series 8 Script Leak - BBC Thanks Fans

After five scripts from the next series of Doctor Who leaked online, the BBC plead to any fans who found them not to share them on fan sites and social media for other fans who wanted to wait for the episodes' broadcasts. Today, the BBC issued the following statement:

We would like to thank Doctor Who fans everywhere for their amazing efforts in helping us contain the recent leaks.

The mistake was damaging and resulted in the exposure of five scripts and the first six unfinished episodes from Series 8 on a publicly accessible FTP site. While there is still a risk that this leak will result in more of this content emerging, so far the impact has been contained to a limited amount of this material through a combination of fans efforts and the plan that we put in place using new technology and internal manpower to limit any illegal activity.

We would particularly like to thank the fansite moderators and Doctor Who devotees who have actively protected the programme. BBC Worldwide has taken this issue extremely seriously and disciplinary action has been implemented as a result of the incident.

Our sincere apologies again to Steven Moffat, the cast and production team who toil long hours to make the show in Cardiff, the BBC, and of course the fans who expect so much better.

The new series of Doctor Who will officially premiere on Saturday 23rd August on BBC One and BBC One HD, a time is to be confirmed.

SILHOUETTE - by Justin Richards
"Vastra and Strax and Jenny? Oh no, we don’t need to bother them. Trust me."

Marlowe Hapworth is found dead in his locked study, killed by an unknown assailant. This is a case for the Great Detective, Madame Vastra. Rick Bellamy, bare-knuckle boxer, has the life drawn out of him by a figure dressed as an undertaker. This angers Strax the Sontaran. The Carnival of Curiosities, a collection of bizarre and fascinating sideshows and performers. This is where Jenny Flint looks for answers.

How are these things connected? And what does Orestes Milton, rich industrialist, have to do with it all? As the Doctor and Clara joint the hunt for the truth they find themselves thrust into a world where nothing and no one are what they seem.

THE BLOOD CELL - by James Goss
"Release the Doctor - or the killing will start."

An asteroid in the furthest reaches of space - the most secure prison for the most dangerous of criminals. The Governor is responsible for the cruellest murderers. So he’s not impressed by the arrival of the man they’re calling the most dangerous criminal in the quadrant. Or, as he prefers to be known, the Doctor.

But when the new prisoner immediately sets about trying to escape, and keeps trying, the Governor sets out to find out why. Who is the Doctor and what’s he really doing here? And who is the young woman who comes every day to visit him, only to be turned away by the guards? When the killing finally starts, the Governor begins to get his answers…

THE CRAWLING TERROR - by Mike Tucker
"Well, I doubt you’ll ever see a bigger insect."

Gabby Nichols is putting her son to bed when she hears her daughter cry out. ‘Mummy there’s a daddy longlegs in my room!’ Then the screaming starts… Kevin Alperton is on his way to school when he is attacked by a mosquito. A big one. Then things get dangerous.

But it isn’t the dead man cocooned inside a huge mass of web that worries the Doctor. It isn’t the swarming, mutated insects that make him nervous. With the village cut off from the outside world, and the insects becoming more and more dangerous, the Doctor knows that unless he can decode the strange symbols engraved on an ancient stone circle, and unravel a mystery dating back to the Second World War, no one is safe.

All three novels are on sale from 9th September at all good bookstores priced £5.89 each.

Deep Breath - First Promo

The BBC have released a new promo from the opening episode of the upcoming eighth series of Doctor Who, Deep Breath. Entertainment Weekly also provided the following article regarding the new series, read on for further details:

Brace yourselves, Whovians: Long-running cult obsession Doctor Who returns to BBC One on 23rd August with a new star, Peter Capaldi, and a new attitude. Compared with Matt Smith’s previous Doctor, Capaldi’s lead character is "a lot fiercer," says Jenna Coleman, who plays his traveling companion, Clara Oswald. "This man is a total adrenaline junkie."

If you don’t count John Hurt’s one-and-done performance in last year’s 50th-anniversary special, Capaldi is the 12th actor to play the show’s Doctor, a two-hearted alien who travels through space - and time - in his ship, the Tardis, and periodically regenerates his outward form. The announcement that Capaldi would replace Smith was simulcast last August on Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor. For the most part the casting was received warmly by fans thanks to Capaldi’s Who-tastic résumé, including an appearance in a 2008 episode of the show and in the 2009 spin-off miniseries, Torchwood: Children of Earth. As one EW.com commenter wrote at the time, "If you’re a Doctor Who fan, you already know him."

The Scottish actor - whose other credits include World War Z and The Fifth Estate - then made the briefest of cameos in the anniversary show before debuting properly at the end of the 2013 special Christmas episode. His first official ep - the feature-length season premiere titled Deep Breath - is set in Victorian England and promises the return of the so-called Paternoster Gang, a trio of detectives made up of the dome-headed alien Strax (Dan Starkey), the lizard-like Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh), and her human wife, Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart).

But that’s almost beside the point. "It’s a big introduction - he’s the new Doctor," says executive producer and head writer Steven Moffat, who penned the premiere. "There’s no point pretending that it’s not the most interesting, dynamic thing that you’ve got to sell in that first episode. It’s going to be about ‘What’s he like? How’s he different?’ I suppose it feels a bit like a character piece, but there’s plenty of action and nonsense and jeopardy, as there ever is in Doctor Who."

Doctor Who will return on Saturday 23rd August to BBC One and BBC One HD, a time is to be confirmed.

Series 8 - Episode 10 Writer Confirmed

The BBC have confirmed the final writer to contribute a story for the next series of Doctor Who, read on for further details:

Children’s novelist and writer for the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony Frank Cottrell Boyce completes the line-up of writers for series 8 of the hit BBC One show Doctor Who.

Cottrell Boyce’s episode for the eagerly-anticipated eighth series will feature a cast of child actors including Harley Bird, the voice of household favourite Peppa Pig, alongside Abigail Eames (Harry and Paul, The Crimson Field), Ashley Foster (The Woman in Black) and Jaydon Harris-Wallace (CITV Text Santa).

Also known for films such as 24 Hour Party People and Millions (directed by Danny Boyle), Cottrell Boyce says: "Of all the thrills that pen and paper have brought into my life, there’s nothing that quite compares to the buzz of unlimited possibility that rushes through your fingers and into your brain when you write the words: ‘Interior … Tardis’."

"I was flabbergasted to be asked to write an episode - partly because I’ve been so absorbed in the last few series that I’d sort of forgotten that it wasn’t real."

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive roducer, says: "Frank's script is pure magic - and everything I could have hoped for from the genius behind the Olympics opening ceremony! Doctor Who is born anew in the mind of a genius!"

The episode will be directed by Sheree Folkson (Casanova, Hit & Miss), and produced by Paul Frift (Escape Artist, Best Possible Taste, Restless).

Other writers confirmed for the eighth series are Mark Gatiss, Phil Ford, Gareth Roberts, Peter Harness, Steve Thompson and Jamie Mathieson.

Doctor Who returns on Saturday 23rd August to BBC One and BBC One HD.
