Torchwood: One Rule - Cover & Details

Big Finish have issued the cover and details of their fourth Torchwood audio play, featuring the return of Tracy-Ann Oberman as Doctor Who character Yvonne Hartman:

Big Finish is delighted to announce the return of Tracy-Ann Oberman as Yvonne Hartman in Torchwood: One Rule, the fourth release in its new series of Torchwood audio plays.

Tracy-Ann first appeared as Yvonne in the 2006 Doctor Who episode Army of Ghosts written by Torchwood creator Russell T Davies. The ruthless head of London’s Torchwood One, her universe-threatening schemes placed her at odds with the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant).

Yvonne perished in a city wide battle, but this new release takes place in Cardiff a year before her death on a secret mission involving a mysterious alien conspiracy. She’s brought her dress sense and her marvellous people skills… and she’s no idea what she’s in for.

"When we presented the idea of using Yvonne," says producer James Goss, "Matt Nicholls at BBC Worldwide came up with a brilliant caveat - he suggested we could have Yvonne, but not the all-powerful Queen Bee of Canary Wharf. Instead he wanted her to come thoroughly unstuck in Cardiff."

Torchwood: One Rule has been written by prolific author Joseph Lidster - whose previous credits include the second series Torchwood episode A Day in the Death.

"Torchwood was my first piece of writing for television and it remains my favourite series." says Joseph, "Not just the television episodes but the books, audiobooks, radio plays, all of it. I’d have been gutted not to have been involved in some way - I’d have happily gone into the studio and made the tea!"

"James Goss gave me a choice of available characters but it was Yvonne who leapt out at me. She’s one of my favourite characters to have appeared in Doctor Who - she has questionable beliefs but she genuinely thinks she’s doing the best thing for her country. She’s also incredibly funny and brilliantly performed by the magnificent Tracy-Ann Oberman."

ONE RULE - written by Joseph Lidster, directed by Barnaby Edwards
It’s been three weeks since the Mayor of Cardiff was killed by a shop dummy and the fight is on to see who will replace him.

Yvonne Hartman is visiting the city to retrieve an invaluable alien device. She's in charge of Torchwood One, she's saving the British Empire and she doesn't care about local politics. But she is going to find herself caught up in that fight. There’s a bloodthirsty alien stalking the streets and there’s a special offer on at the all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet.

It’s the 26th of March 2005 and it’s the day that everything changes.

Torchwood: One Rule will be released in December priced £9.99 physically and £7.99 digitally.

Series 9 - Radio Times Cover

The latest edition of Radio Times magazine features yet another Doctor Who-themed cover and content in preparation for Series 9, read on for further details:

This issue of Radio Times looks forward to the news series and talks to stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, who discuss their on-screen relationship, the challenges of working on the series and the success of the show.

Jenna Coleman on the announcement of Peter Capaldi:
"I’d no idea who would take over from Matt Smith, and when I was told it was Peter, it was one of those ‘aha, that makes sense - genius’ kind of moments. But the first thing he said to me was 'There will be no romance in the Tardis.'"

Peter Capaldi on the challenges of working on Doctor Who:
"It’s a difficult show to act. It goes from B-movie sci-fi to Freudian drama and tragedy. There’s romance, pantomime, humour and sadness, so you’re kept on your toes. I try not to be too romantic or sentimental. Sometimes Jenna will run down a corridor shouting, ‘Doctor, there’s a monster,’ and stuff. Part of the tradition is that sets wobble and you have to fight a giant spider made of rubber. I enjoy that. It’s not so well budgeted as viewers might think but it looks great because of the talent of the people working on it."

Also in the new issue, Steven Moffat’s Series 9 episode guide teases each of the twelve episodes in the new series.

The magazine is out now until 21st September priced £1.99 per copy. Frank Skinner - guest star from the Doctor Who episode Mummy on the Orient Express - will host a Doctor Who session at the Radio Times festival on 25th September from 7:00pm. Doctor Who returns this Saturday at 7:40pm to BBC One and BBC One HD.

Doctor Who Magazine - Issue 491

Panini have issued the cover and details of the next edition of Doctor Who magazine:

THE FIRST FOUR EPISODES OF THE NEW SERIES OF DOCTOR WHO, PREVIEWED  IN DWM 491!
Doctor Who magazine exclusively previews the first four episodes of the new series: The Magician’s Apprentice & The Witch’s Familiar and Under the Lake & Before the Flood

Under the Lake and Before the Flood form Toby Whithouse’s first two-part Doctor Who story - and it hinges on time travel - and fairly mind-bending time travel at that. While plotting and writing, did Toby ever come to regret taking the wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey route?

"Oh never, I loved it! I’ve always wanted to do a timey-wimey episode," he says. "In fact, it was going to be a lot more timey-wimey, but we lost some of that before we started filming. It’s enormous fun to deposit something in a script, then have the reason for it happen later."

This is also the first story that Toby’s written to star Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.

"I think he’s the most ‘alien’ Doctor we’ve had since the show came back," says Toby. "Even though the essentials of the character remain the same - his heroism, his brilliance, his enthusiasm - he feels to me like much more of an outsider than Chris Eccleston or David Tennant or Matt Smith were. He’s more strange and otherwordly. That’s really interesting to play with."

Torchwood: Forgotten Lives - Cover & Details

Big Finish have issued the cover and details of their third Torchwood audio play, featuring the return of Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper and Kai Owen as Rhys Williams:

Big Finish are thrilled to announce the return of Eve Myles and Kai Owen as husband-and-wife team Gwen Cooper and Rhys Williams in the third release in a new series of Torchwood audio dramas.

"Captain Jack’s the poster boy, Ianto’s the style, but Eve and Kai are the heart of Torchwood," says producer James Goss. "Listening to the two of them back together is an utter joy. We pick up their story after Miracle Day. How has life been treating them? It’s a delight to find out."

Eve appeared in all 41 episodes of the popular BBC series, created by Russell T Davies. A dedicated police officer turned Torchwood second in-command, Gwen fought tooth and nail to defend Cardiff and her family from the very worst the Rift had to offer.

Husband Rhys supported her from home, keeping their infant daughter Anwen safe during the worldwide phenomenon known as the Miracle. Eve and Kai return in Forgotten Lives. The couple are plagued by the same alien plot uncovered by Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) in opening story The Conspiracy. Many years later, and Torchwood is just a fond memory for Gwen and Rhys. Then, one day, the phone rings….

Forgotten Lives is written by Emma Reeves who is the co-creator and lead writer of robot drama Eve for CBBC. Other TV credits include The Dumping Ground, Tracy Beaker Returns, Dead Gorgeous, Young Dracula, Spirit Warriors, The Murder of Princess Diana, Doctors and Belonging. She also writes for radio, and for stage, where her work includes the Olivier-nominated
adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson’s Hetty Feather.

"I still can’t believe that I’ve been asked to write a story for the brilliant characters of Gwen and Rhys" says Emma. "I’ve been lucky enough to write for Eve before, on Belonging, and I know that she has a unique gift of imbuing every syllable with the deepest meaning. Getting Eve Myles and Kai Owen, too, is basically like winning the writer lottery."

FORGOTTEN LIVES - written by Emma Reeves, directed by Scott Hancock
It has been four years since the Miracle, and Gwen and Rhys's lives have gone back to normal, very normal. They're raising their daughter (they've got pictures they'd be only too happy to show you), they're living in a nice house, and they're almost on top of the laundry.

Captain Jack Harkness has been missing from the world and their lives for a long time. But late one night the phone rings, and they're summoned to an isolated part of North Wales. The Bryn Offa Nursing Home contains a dark secret, an alien threat, and someone who really shouldn't be there.

Gwen and Rhys are about to discover that Torchwood stays with you for the rest of your life.

Torchwood: Forgotten Lives will be released in November priced £9,99 physically and £7.99 digitally. In other news: the time of broadcast for Doctor Who: The Magician's Apprentice has been finalised as 7:40pm on Saturday 19th September.

Ticket holders also get the chance to take part in Drama School sessions run by one of the show’s directors, in addition to trying their hand out at some of the many jobs on set in the Production Village.

2015 Christmas Special - River Song to Return!

The BBC have confirmed that Alex Kingston is to reprise her role as River Song in the 2015 Doctor Who Christmas special, read on for further details:

Alex Kingston returns to Cardiff to reclaim her role as Professor River Song for the highly anticipated 2015 Doctor Who Christmas special, part of BBC One’s essential seasonal viewing.

It’s Christmas Day in the future and the TARDIS is parked on a snowy village street, covered in icicles, awaiting its next adventure. Time traveller River Song meets her husband’s new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time this Christmas.

Day one of filming the eleventh Doctor Who Christmas special starts this week and is written by lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, produced by Nikki Wilson and directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who, Sherlock).

River Song made her first Doctor Who appearance in 2008 in Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead and has appeared in 15 episodes to date.

Award winning Alex Kingston comments on her reappearance, "To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!"

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, adds, "Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who - and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song? The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time..."

The witty line-up of guest cast joining Alex for a magical adventure on the TARDIS will be announced over the coming months.

The 2015 Doctor Who Christmas special will broadcast this December, while Series 9 commences on Saturday 19th September on BBC One and BBC One HD, a time to be confirmed.
